Flooring Calculator

Estimate packs, planks, underlay and waste for laminate, vinyl or engineered wood flooring.

Classic pack-based calculation

Next step after flooring

Once packs and waste are set, the usual follow-up is baseboard and a complete floor budget.

What this calculator covers

  • Net floor area. You can subtract fixed built-ins that will not receive flooring.
  • Layout-specific waste. Straight, diagonal and herringbone layouts use different base waste rates.
  • Real pack math. The result includes packs and plank count, not just square footage.
  • Underlay and cost. You can estimate underlay and budget in the same pass.

Common calculation mistakes

Using straight-layout waste for every pattern. Diagonal and herringbone layouts generate much more offcut waste. Treating them like a basic layout is the fastest way to underorder.

Forgetting fixed built-ins. If flooring definitely will not go under kitchen runs or large fitted wardrobes, those zones should be removed from the estimate.

Stopping at square meters. Material is purchased by the box. Area alone is not enough if you want a clean purchase list.

What to check before buying

Confirm the pack coverage. Two collections with similar plank size can still cover different areas per box. That one number changes the whole purchase plan.

Keep the same production batch. Color and texture can shift slightly between batches, especially in large open-plan spaces.

Add underlay and transitions early. The flooring itself is only part of the order. Underlay, trims and spare planks are easier to budget for in the same pass.

FAQs

How much waste should I allow for laminate or vinyl?

Straight layouts usually need less waste than diagonal or herringbone patterns. The calculator applies a layout-based base percentage and lets you add extra waste if needed.

Should I subtract closets or kitchen units?

Yes, but only for fixed built-ins where flooring definitely will not be installed.
